I've figured it out.
Drop a file with the name ".start~%your workflow file name% into processes/.cache/status folder.
That will start your workflow.

Is there a way to automatically "start" a workflow as soon as its xml is copied into the workflow folder?
I need to get workflows to automatically start as soon as the XML lands into the workflow folder.
At the moment the workflow gets picked up but it does not start, It needs someone to "start" it .
