Farming / REST / RunAsApplication

Post by ThomasM »

Hi there,

as a noob on Network things, can anybody help me setting up my farm correct, please?

Hardware:
1. Scanner-PC. Win10pro 24/7. This one creates .AVI and is connected to the Switch
2. NAS_01. Synology 6.2. This NAS has all Watchfolders and is the home of FFAStrans. Connected to the Switch.
3. Renderer_1 and Renderer_2. Both PC running win10pro 24/7 (they do not restart automatically on new updates). Connected to the Switch.
4. NAS_02. Synology 6.2. This NAS is the destination for all FFAStrans-Outputs. Connected to the Switch.

I start FFAStrans on both Renderers directly from NAS_01.

-------CONFIG-----------
in FFAStrans CONFIGURATION-Window

General:
Global media-cache is set to NAS_01.
Environment is left empty.

Host:
Local host media cache is set to "use global shared media cache"
Web REST service is set to "Run as application"

Resources
is not enabled
----------END CONFIG-------------

with this settings enabled, I have a Farm working. But...

What is REST? What is the advantage to "install as windows service"? What url?

Can I improve stability or workflow by enabling REST? I have no opportunity to set up a second Farm, so experimenting is a no-go... :-((

I often get "cannot execute exe.manager" or something like that on both renderers (message appears in german - sorry.). Is it possible, that I missed a setting?

Any help appreciated.

tom

Hi tom,

The REST service is a two part service: One, it acts as a headless FFAStrans. Meaning you don't need to run windows logged in as a user with the workflow manager running in order to have a working transcoder. Two, it acts as the API service. This is mostly for those who do scripting or programming and want to integrate FFAStrans into their own workflow without using the supplied workflow manager. F.ex. the excellent web interface by Harald Jordan relies heavily on the REST service. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=789

When do you get the "cannot execute..." problem?

Steinar,

thank you for clearing things up!

Whenever I get the "cannot Execute..." again, I will do a screenshot.
