Hardware Recommendations?

Post by dklooker »

Hi,

Are there hardware recommendations voor FFAStrans you can give?

I am going to use it 50% for datamanagement. Approx 1TB per day moving files around. And 50% encoding probably 500minutes a day.

Speed is of course everything.

My first idea is
-CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X
-DISK: 4xSSD 1TB Raid0
-OS: Windowsserver
-2x10Gbe Ethernet
-19"rack server

Any ideas?

Kind regards,
David

Hey there!
Well as usual i got to say that ffastrans per-se does not really use any resources but the used tools.
It really depends a lot on what exactly you are doing mostly, is it like just encode to h264 or do you also use some filteringn (e.g. A/V decoder).

Did u already work trough this?

Whats your most common input and output formats and are you interested in a single job being extremely fast or do you have to run multiple paralell? What about Hardware encoding/NVENC and such, can you benefit from better speed at lower quality than using CPU only encoding?
I recently got some high clocked new XEONs and CoreI9 but no threadripper if you are interested in a benchmark with your settings.

Whats missing in all existing hardwaare topics so far is that these days you want to prevent having more than 64 Virtual cores as windows will then create processor groups and if you dont have exactly 128 Vcores, this will most likely end up in a painful speed degrade for you.

Another topic that is rarely covered is the heat. The AMD you named has about 300W and all of them will be used for encoding. Do you have enough A/C capacity for it? 300W doesnt sound a lot but it gets more interesting when you buy more of them and put them in your rack.
emcodem, wrapping since 2009 you got the rhyme?

I re-read the other forumpost. And there is enough information there to keep me going...
