Using the P2 Monitor feature

Post by jukeboxjim »

I'm trying to find the correct usage for the Panasonic P2 file structure monitor. Is the "root" folder the CONTENTS folder, or the one before it? For example: P2 CARD->CONTENTS->VIDEO. I currently have the monitor pointing to the P2 CARD directory. Is that correct? Also, what is the intended function of this watch folder? My goal is to wrap the individual MXF video and audio clips into an OP1a MXF that is easier to manage for editing purposes. I don't want it to process the PROXY files though. It would be a plus if the timecode passes through. I've been using FFAStrans to rewrap MOV files from Final Cut into PC-compatible MXF files and it works flawlessly. I'm looking forward to the lastest release. Thanks!
I love it when a plan comes together!

Hi jukeboxjim, and thank you for using FFAStrans! :-)

FFAStrans does a recursive search for *.XML file and checks if the file is a valid P2 metadata file. It does not matter what folder you monitor as long as it finds these files and the associated media files in the correct P2 folder structure.
However, the current P2 watch feature has a couple of shortcomings: It does not care about timecode or date of creation and it creates a mkv file rather than an mxf. These issues has been addressed in the upcoming 0.6.0 version of FFAStrans and I think it will suit your needs.
