1080i to 480i down convert

Post by Rubikean »

First, thank you for this amazing tool! I am several days into working with it and starting to understand the power ffastrans gives us. I am pretty new to ffmpeg and avisynth, and trying to figure the workflow out.

I am trying to down convert 1080i (xdcam 50 59.94) to 480i mpeg2. Specifically, I am trying to figure out how to animorphicly squeeze the original 16x9 to 4x3. The reason is because the automation system and channel are sd.
Should I be using an avisynth custom script to handle the field flip then squeeze the image into the new aspect ratio? Can anyone share a workflow that does something similar or give me a clue to how to accomplish this?

Hi Chris, I'm glad to read you're enoying FFAStrans! :-)

Tell me, are you aiming for XDCAM MPEG-IMX flavor or is it just "straight" mpeg2?

Hi Steipal,
I need straight mpeg2 for this workflow.

Ok, what have you tried so far? Have you tried creating a custom preset in the "Custom FFmpeg"-encoder? If not, do you have a small sample file with the in the correct format så I can analyze? If so, send it to post@ffastrans.com so I can take a look.
There are many ways of creating a "straight" mpeg2 file unless you have specific restrictions on what your system accepts.
