Populate variable from txt file

Hi,

Just wondering if there would be a way to populate a variable from a text file. I am mainly looking to have subfolders of a watch folder where each sub folder could include some information about the transcode, for example the path on where to deliver the files. I think I can manage the copying etc but I am not certain if I can read a txt file (or simliar)?
